Consumer Tax Credits Worth up to $1500 for Cooler Roofing
As a result of the Stimulus Package signed in February of 2009, homeowners who make energy efficient updates to their roof with EnergyStar® labeled roofing materials may be eligible for a tax credit worth 30% for those materials (up to $1,500) over a two-year period.
Benefits of Energy Efficient Energy Star® Qualified Roof Products
Energy Star qualified roof products reflect more of the sun's rays. This can lower roof surface temperature by up to 100F, decreasing the amount of heat transferred into a building.
By lowering heat transfer, Energy Star products can help reduce the amount of air conditioning needed in buildings. They can also reduce peak cooling demand by 10–15 percent, or more. Some homes can save as much as 40% in summer cooling energy costs. Highly emissive roofs help reduce urban air temperatures and make for a better environment.
These benefits mean less money out of your wallet, less dependence on energy resources and less general air pollution in your neighborhood and across the nation.
Tax Credits for Homeowners on Roofing Materials
The following guideline is provided to better acquaint the consumer with the highlights of the energy efficiency updates provided by the Stimulus Package of 2009. Tax credits that are available for residential home roofing improvements:
- must be placed in service from January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2010. Placed in service is defined as property that is ready and available for use.
- must be for taxpayer's principal residence.
- Second homes and rentals are not eligible for the tax credit.
- $1,500 is the maximum total amount that can be claimed for all products placed in service in 2009 & 2010 for most home improvements.
- must have a Manufacturer Certification Statement to qualify, of which Affordable Roofing will supply you with.
- Manufacturer's Certificate is not required to be sent with tax return, but for record keeping, save all receipts and certificates.
- improvements made in 2009 will be claimed on your 2009 taxes (filed by April 15, 2010) — use IRS Tax Form 5695 (2009 version) — it will be available late 2009 or early 2010
